Gosan public library

A new public library in South Korea - concept (competition)

The design of this competition entry for a new build library in Korea takes its cues from both the surrounding site and the type of activities to be undertaken within the building.

At ground floor level the building is light and open, with perimeter full height glazing and structural columns visible to echo the patterns of the trees on the existing site. The open aspect of the ground floor is inviting and reflects the more public/common uses contained on this level of the building.

As the user progresses upwards through the library the spaces become more private, with reading rooms and areas for more reflective study.

The scheme features outdoor planted terraces to lessen the impact of the building and provide areas for users to experience the outdoors and soften the boundaries between inside and out.
